How To Change Sim Card Ownership

In the event of handing over your sim card registered in your name to another person, the basic requirement is transferring the sim card ownership from your name to the new user. This is because if the new owner of the sim card indulges in anything illegal through that particular sim card, the law enforcement agencies hold the old user responsible since the sim card is registered in his/her name. There are certain preconditions to effect sim card ownership transfer and a set of steps which you are required to follow.

Eligibility for sim card ownership transfer

The new user of the sim card should be a resident of the same country as the old user. Sim card ownership cannot be transferred to foreign tourists. The sim card provider needs to ensure that the new owner is a resident of the country to allow the transfer.

Sim Card Ownership

The sim card connection should not be under scrutiny of police or any other law enforcement agency. In case the sim card is under the radar of the law, the ownership transfer to a new user cannot be allowed.

Sim card ownership transfer must be voluntary. Both the parties need to willfully transfer the sim card ownership. No person can be forced to relinquish or take the ownership of a sim card.

Process for sim card ownership transfer

Proof of Address and Proof of Identity of both the current owner and the new owner of the sim card must be procured. In addition, a No Objection Certificate from the existing user and Letter of Acceptance from the new user are also required. Both these documents need to be obtained from the service center of the particular service provider.

In case the ownership transfer is between two organizations, both the NOC and LOA must be on the letterhead of the company and signed by an authorized signatory. Organization to organization transfer also requires a Memorandum of Article and Incorporation of Certificate.

The documents need to be self-attested and submitted with the authorized service center of the service provider. Both the parties need to carry the originals of their ID and address proofs to the service center for verification. ID proof and address proof must be issued by the government, such as PAN, Aadhar, Driving License, Voter ID, Passport and others.

The sim card ownership is transferred on completion of the verification process. The new user gets a fresh sim card which is activated within two days.
